Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Employee Engagement

Promoting and supporting equality and diversity in the workplace are important aspects of people management. However, to reap the benefits of a diverse workforce it is vital to have an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, is able to participate fully and to achieve their potential.

Diversity means ensuring representation among employees across race, age, ethnicity, gender, religion and other differentiators.

Inclusion is a state of feeling valued, respected and supported. Combined, diversity and inclusion is a powerful driver of innovation and is today considered an essential driver of business success.

Diversity of thought leads to innovation and better connections to the consumer.

An effective equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy goes beyond compliance and adds value to an organisation, contributing to employee well-being and engagement. Staff wellbeing drives an organisation's long-term effectiveness.  Employee well-being deals with how an employee feels whereas employee engagement is about how employees feel about their role, their work and value within their organisation. Downey et al (2015) found that a high trust climate in an organisation provided a strong underlying mechanism through which diversity practices transmit a positive effect on engagement. However, the research also identified that perceptions of equality and diversity are only positively related to trust when employees also perceive high levels of inclusion.

To support organisations to create high trust climates and equality, diversity and inclusion practices, The Equality Business can deliver projects in the areas of Diversity enhancement;  Building an inclusive culture and workforce; and Measuring and managing EDI progress.
